Avengers: Doomsday lands in theaters December 18, 2026, and Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU. Not as Tony Stark. As Victor von Doom, the man who has been making Marvel heroes miserable since the Kennedy administration.

If your Doom knowledge comes entirely from the 2005 Fantastic Four movie, we're not judging. (We're judging a little.) Here's what more than 60 years of comics can tell you before you sit down with your overpriced popcorn.

The Basics

1. He's been around since 1962

Doom first showed up in Fantastic Four #5, cover-dated July 1962, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He has been Marvel's go-to worst day of your life ever since.

2. He's a head of state

Doom rules Latveria, a small Eastern European country. That makes him a monarch with diplomatic immunity, which is a big reason the heroes can't just punch him and call the cops.

3. He blames Reed Richards for everything

Victor and Reed met as students at Empire State University. Reed spotted a flaw in one of Victor's experiments and said so. Victor ran it anyway, it blew up in his face, and he has spent the rest of his life insisting it was Reed's fault.

4. It started with his mother

Victor's mother, Cynthia, dabbled in dark magic, and her soul ended up in Mephisto's hands. Freeing her became a lifelong obsession. Starting in the early '70s, the comics even made it a yearly tradition: once a year, Doom tries to break her out of hell. It never goes well.

5. The mask was forged by monks

After the accident, Victor traveled to Tibet, where monks forged his armor. In the classic telling, he put the mask on before it had fully cooled. That's commitment.

6. Nobody agrees on how bad his face is

Depending on who's writing, Doom's face ranges from horribly ruined to one small scar his ego can't live with. Either way, he's not taking the mask off for you.

7. He's a scientist and a sorcerer

Most villains pick a lane. Doom builds time machines and casts spells. That combination is a big part of why he's so hard to beat.

8. Doombots are his favorite excuse

Doom keeps an army of robot doubles. Any time he loses, there's a decent chance it wasn't really Doom. Fans have been joking about it for decades.

9. Doom calls himself Doom

Third person, always. Doom does not say "I." Doom finds it beneath him.

10. His word means something

Doom is a tyrant, but he has a strict (and extremely self-serving) sense of honor. When he gives his word, he keeps it, technically. Remember that for #18.

The Stories That Matter

11. He teamed up with Namor almost immediately

In Fantastic Four #6, Doom joined forces with Namor the Sub-Mariner in one of the earliest villain team-ups of Marvel's Silver Age. Tenoch Huerta Mejía, who played Namor in Wakanda Forever, is in the Doomsday cast. Just saying.

12. Doctor Strange owes him one

In Triumph and Torment (1989), by Roger Stern and Mike Mignola, Doom finishes second in a contest of the world's sorcerers, and Strange ends up bound to help him try to rescue his mother's soul. If you read one Doom story, make it this one.

13. He has already conquered the world once

In the 1987 graphic novel Emperor Doom, he pulled it off using the Purple Man's mind-control powers, and found out that running everything is less satisfying than trying to.

14. The original Secret Wars gave him godlike power

Marvel's 1984 Secret Wars, by Jim Shooter and Mike Zeck, had the all-powerful Beyonder drop heroes and villains on an alien world to fight it out. Doom's plan: steal the Beyonder's power. It worked, for a while.

15. The 2015 Secret Wars made him God Emperor

Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić's Secret Wars (2015) is the big one. The multiverse collapses, and Doom saves what's left by stitching the pieces into a single patchwork world called Battleworld, with himself in charge. The next Avengers movie after Doomsday is Avengers: Secret Wars, due December 17, 2027. Connect the dots.

16. Incursions are the setup

Before Secret Wars, Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers books had entire universes crashing into each other. Marvel's pitch for Doomsday has heroes from three different universes on a collision course. Sounds familiar.

17. He's been Iron Man

In Infamous Iron Man (2016), by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, a sort-of-reformed Doom took up the Iron Man mantle while Tony Stark was out of commission. So RDJ going from Tony to Doom has comics precedent.

18. He's the current Sorcerer Supreme

In 2024's Blood Hunt, vampires blotted out the sun and Doctor Strange needed Doom's help. Doom's price was the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Strange handed it over on Doom's promise to give it back once the world was saved. Doom, being Doom, decided the world wasn't saved yet.

19. Then he took over the planet

That led to One World Under Doom (2025), by Ryan North and R.B. Silva, where Doom became emperor of Earth. No mind control this time. He offered world leaders what they wanted, and they said yes.

20. The MCU has already started the countdown

The Thunderbolts* post-credits scene showed the Fantastic Four's ship arriving in the main MCU. The Fantastic Four: First Steps mid-credits scene jumped four years ahead to show a cloaked figure holding Doom's mask, kneeling beside young Franklin Richards. In the comics, Franklin is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. Doom noticed.

Before You Go

The Doomsday cast pulls from everywhere: the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and X-Men actors from the Fox films, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden. Florence Pugh is back as Yelena Belova, which is the perfect excuse to mention our Belova Potato Farm shirt. If you get it, you get it.

More movie and TV shirts are in the Shirtnado collection. Doom would approve. Doom approves of very little.
