The Michael Scott Paper Company Was the Best Arc in The Office

A supply closet, a PT Cruiser, and no pricing strategy. Why the Michael Scott Paper Company arc is the best stretch of The Office.

The Michael Scott Paper Company gets its own shirt because it deserves one. It's the best stretch of The Office, and it happened in a supply closet.

How it started

In season 5, corporate brings in Charles Miner to manage Michael, treats him like a nuisance, and takes away the one thing Michael actually has, which is being the boss. He quits in spectacular fashion, announcing his own company on the way out the door.

Pam quits to join him. Ryan, at his lowest point after the fraud arrest and the bowling alley job, signs on too. Their office is a windowless space in the same building's lower level, small enough that the three of them sit within arm's reach of each other.

Why it worked

The joke is that Michael's business plan is nonsense. He has no volume pricing, no infrastructure, and a delivery vehicle that is a PT Cruiser. He is also, as always, very good at the part of sales that involves people liking him.

So the little company starts pulling real clients away from Dunder Mifflin by undercutting them, and by the time Michael works out that he's losing money on every sale, he has done enough damage that corporate has to deal with him.

The buyout

That's the payoff. Dunder Mifflin buys the company, mostly to make it stop. Michael negotiates his own people back into jobs, walks back into the branch, and gets to be right for once.

It's the rare arc where the show lets Michael Scott win on his own terms, without making him look like a fool. David Wallace even tells him he's a fine businessman, sort of.

Why it's the peak

The Michael Scott Paper Company stretch works because the stakes are real: Pam gave up a steady paycheck, Ryan has nothing left, and Michael bet his whole identity on it. The comedy sits on top of something that actually matters.

Also, the closet office is funny every single time.
